A study of the New England town meeting found citizens reporting headaches, trembling, and even fear for one's heart as a result of the meetings. Altogether, a quarter of the people in a random sample of the two spontaneously suggested that the conflictual character of the meetings disturbed them (Mansbridge, 1979; 1973).
